Mumbai - Six-Month-Old Baby Rushed To Hospital After Polio Vaccine

6-month-old has adverse reaction to polio vaccine, Mumbai

Ayush Wadekar’s leg got swollen and his body
was covered in rashes a day after he got the
vaccine on January 18

A six-month-old boy from Thane had an adverse reaction to the pulse polio vaccine he received a couple of days ago. Ayush Wadekar, a resident of Kisan Nagar, has been admitted to a private hospital in Thane.

Bhuasaheb Wadekar, Ayush’s father said he had taken his son to Dr Vijay Yadav’s clinic in Kisan Nagar on January 18 for a vaccination. “The next morning, the leg on which the polio vaccine was injected had swollen. Also, he developed rashes and red spots all over his body. We took him to Dr Yadav but he said that my son would have to be admitted to a hospital,” said Wadekar.

On January 20, when Ayush’s condition deteriorated, he was rushed to Dr Sanjeev Pawar’s hospital. The child’s condition has not improved much.

On Thursday, the Wadekars approached Shree Nagar Police Station and filed a complaint.

S D Ovhal, senior inspector of Shree Nagar Police Station, said, “We have received a complaint from the parents that their son was seriously affected after being given a polio dose.

We have sent all the relevant papers to the civil surgeon and Thane Municipal Corporation’s (TMC) health department. If it is found that it was due to Dr Yadav’s negligence, we will book him.”

Meanwhile, the State pulse polio immunisation team has initiated an inquiry into the incident. Such incidents in their parlance are termed ‘Adverse Effect Following Immunisation’. “Such things cannot happen after immunisation, but it is our duty to investigate the case,” said Dr Kishore Duthade, sub-regional team leader of Maharashtra for the National Polio Surveillance.

Several attempts to contact Dr Yadav did not yield any results as he was unavailable at his clinic and had switched off his phone.
